What are the brackets on 7186 in front of the cabside window? Are they for a side mirror?

Yes DB they are wing mirrors. If you look closely you can see the back of the mirror.
7186 was one of the "loaners" to the Auckland metro pool running push-pull trains in the suburbs, and as such required the wing mirrors as part of the safety systems for dealing with the public, allowing the driver to see what was happening behind him at a quick glance instead of getting RSI in his neck from looking back at every station.
Many locos have them fitted, including all the DC's and DFT's that are, or have been in Auckland Metro service.
